Episode 10 – 1920s Megastar Mystery Unsolved: The Strange Story of Aimee Semple

The life of Sister Aimee Semple McPherson is one of faith, scandal, and intrigue. Born in Canada in 1890, Aimee’s life changed dramatically when she met a Pentecostal missionary and fell in love. After traveling and preaching together, they embarked on a missionary trip to China, where her husband fell ill and died. Aimee recovered and gave birth to their daughter before returning to Canada to work at the Salvation Army. However, her calling to preach was too strong. She left her second husband to become a roadside preacher, gaining fame for her faith healing and preaching from the backseat of her convertible.

Aimee’s ministry grew by leaps and bounds. She founded the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel, building the Angelus Temple in Los Angeles, which could seat five thousand people. She also became the first woman to preach a sermon over the radio, using it to spread her message to millions of people. Her passion for helping others led her to provide charity work during the Great Depression, feeding almost two million people.

However, Aimee’s life was plagued by scandal and turmoil. The biggest scandal and mystery surrounded her disappearance in 1926 when she disappeared while swimming at a beach near Santa Monica. After a five-week search, she staggered out of the Sonora desert in Mexico, claiming she had been kidnapped and held prisoner. The police were unconvinced and instead believed it to be a publicity stunt. Later, rumors of love affairs and scandalous pictures followed her, leading her to hire chaperones to ensure she was not accused of improper behavior.

Aimee Semple McPherson remains one of American religious history’s most fascinating and enigmatic figures. Her story is a testament to the power of faith and the enduring human desire to believe in something greater than ourselves. Her legacy lives on through the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel and the Angelus Temple, still a National Historic Landmark.
